Mustang Round Up Excites in Early Season Contest

Under the beautiful green Saddleback Mountains, Mustang Round Up featured strong competition and special thrill performances. This meet brought together 21 high schools for 11 hours of competition. This was the first meet of the 2026 track and field season for most athletes.

Some of the highlights include...

Braelyn Combe // Santiago (Corona) - SR The Arkansas-bound athlete left no doubt she's out to make the most of her senior year. From what I can tell, Braelyn did not race the 3200 meter distance last year. This meet starts with the 3200-meter races, and Braelyn was on a mission to click off 75-second laps. Braelyn navigated traffic to finish lap eight in 70 seconds and joined the sub 10 club with a meet record 9:59.72, which is a USA #1 mark.

-- Maximo Zavaleta after winning the varsity boys' 3200m in 9:07 --

Maximo Zavaleta // ML King - SRSecured first place with double wins in the 3200m and 1600m races. Maximo's 3200m time was 9:07.81. He decided to challenge the 1600 double, which resulted in a 4:09.86 win; only 2.7 seconds off his personal best in this very early season competition. Maximo will be bringing it during his senior track season.

The Servite Boys 4x100m Relay team is scary good. How good? These young men moved the baton to a new USA #1 time of 40.05! This team included: Jorden Wells (SO), Benjamin Harris (JR), Kamil Pelovello (SO), and Jace Wells (SO). Two hours later, these same athletes made another statement....

Servite Boys sweep 100m 1-4 spots: The Servite sprinters performed so well in the relay race that they pursued even more. They swept the first four positions in the 100-meter Varsity race, with two athletes achieving personal-best times. The top 4 include Benjamin Harris, Kamil Pelovello (PR), Jorden Wells, and Jace Wells (PR). The Servite men mean business.

-- Trishelle Barge won the girls' 100m hurdles at the Mustang Round Up --

Trishelle Barge // Roosevelt - SR: She achieved first place in both the 100mH (14.81) and the 300mH (44.05), setting a personal record in the latter. This was her first 300m hurdles race, where she broke the 45-second mark.

Maliyah Collins // Rosary - SO: She also accomplished double wins in her sprint races. Maliyah raced to first in the 100m (11.77) and 200m (24.13). Both race times are close to her personal record from last season, even in this early-season meet.

We will see some of these athletes competing in two weeks at The Armory in New York City at the Nike Indoor Nationals. More exciting competition is coming as the 2026 California high school track season moves forward. Best wishes to all.
