CANDIDATES
Layla Merancio (Buchanan)
Layla Merancio, the Buchanan sophomore, has run phenomenally all season, and that continued at the John Seaman's Cross Country Invitational. The junior ran 17:05 to win the major invitational in the CIF Central Section, leading her team to a dominant victory that required only 26 points.
Maya Hoxie (La Serna)
At the Del Rio League Finals, Mya Hoxie earned her first cross country league title with an over 2-minute victory. She ran 17:15, which ties the 3-mile personal record that she set earlier this season at the Woodbridge Cross Country Invitational.
Over the past couple of years, the Trinity League Finals for cross country and track have featured nationally ranked competition. This year was no different for the JSerra Girls, who have maintained their No. 2 nationally ranked position. However, the individual champion this year goes to Carol Dye of Santa Margarita, who ran 17:39 to win it all.
Brenna Mannion (Vista De Lago)
The fastest 5000m cross country race in California last week goes to Breanna Mannion of Vista del Lago, who won the CVC Finals. Mannion finished in 17:07, beating the second-place finisher by 23 seconds in one of the most competitive leagues in the CIF Sac-Joaquin section.
Giselle Fernandez (Riverbank)
At the Motherlode XC Finals, Gisselle Fernandez ran 17:52 to win the championship race in her senior year. Fernandez won the race with an over 2-minute gap from second place.
