Saturday- Rob Brenner Championship Boys Race
Closing out the Championship races, the Rob Brenner Championship Boys Race will likely end up being talked about and remembered for many years to come. Superstar senior, Jackson Spencer of Herriman (Utah) not only led out the race with a 4:35 first mile, but he then threw down a spectacular surge in the mid-point of the race at the hill, never looking back. Picking up his pace over the final mile, Spencer unleashed a vicious kick over the last 800 meters to destroy the long-standing previous Woodward Park course record (previously held by German Fernandez) by 8 seconds in a remarkable time of 14:16.9. Simply put, it was the single-greatest individual male cross country performance ever run on California soil. Making Spencer's performance all the more incredible is that he defeated a stellar field that had 8 runners break 15:00 and 77 runners break 16:00. Maximo Zavaleta ran a strong race to finish in 2nd Place in 14:44.8, followed by Blake Bay in 3rd Place in 14:51.6. In addition, two sophomore runners, Elias Thronson of Davis and Mario Montoya of Redondo Union, became the fastest sophomores ever at Woodward Park. Both Thronson (4th Place in 14:54.3) and Montoya (7th Place in 14:57.7) broke the previous sophomore course record time at Woodward Park.In the team competition, Jesuit rebounded from its 11-point loss to Herriman (Utah) at the Woodbridge Classic to win by 22 points (90-112). It was a truly impressive team performance by Jesuit, with their Top-6 runners all running under 15:40, in a team time of 76:09, and with a gap of only 24 seconds between their first and fifth runners. Herriman finished in 2nd Place with Woodbridge finishing strong and earning 3rd Place. It was truly a Rob Brenner Championship Race for the ages.
