GIRLS
Azra Gercek (Partola)
Azra Gercek is the only Future Star who didn't race last weekend, but her performance a few weeks back at the California Winter Track and Field Championships is to good to skip over. This freshman ran 1:33.24 to place second in the 600m dash in a thrilling 600m race.
Gercek mentions that a messy start with a lot of bumping made the race difficult, but she managed to stay outside afterward to avoid any real trouble. Then, she made a huge charge in the last 100m to overtake second place and capture a personal record.
Although she hopes to gain more strength this season to improve her 1600m time, Gercek will primarily focus on running the 800m this spring. Last year, she ran 2:13.82 at the USATF Junior National Olympics.
Lyric Scott (Canyon- Canyon Country)
The freshman, Lyric Scott, put the entire state on notice by running a Califonia number one time of 56.29 in the 400m. This is a phenomenal mark for any high school girl to end her season with, but for a freshman to start her high school career like this is a different story.
Scott showed shades of this at the CA Winter Track and Field Championships, where she ran 40.16 in the 300m after competing in the 150m and 60m that same day.
She will make a big difference for Canyon, who placed 7th at the CIF State Track and Field Championships in the 4x400m last season. Although they lost great seniors in Mikaela Warr and Briana Bartone, they also gained a freshman who can match Alaya Graves-Hogains's 400m speed.
By the way, Alaya ran 56.09 as a freshman last year!!
BOYS
Quran Clayton Jr. (Oak Hills)
Since the start of the CIF season, every time the sophomore has stepped onto the track, it has led to a personal record.
Quran Clayton first opened up his season at the Oak Hills Classic Invite with a 14.41 in the 100m hurdles, securing California's top spot in the rankings. This isn't even the event he focused on during last year's postseason.
He then ran at the Oak Hills vs. Granite Hills meet, where he finally ran his primary event from last season. Clayton dropped a 10.66 at this dual meet to secure California's third-ranked spot in the 100m dash. He would go on to close out the day with a 39.89 in the 300m hurdles, showing his ability to do it all in 2025.
Gianni Haynes (Bishop Alemany)
At the NIKE LB Poly Trackrabbit Invitational, Gianni Haynes clocked the fastest 400m in California at 48.77 seconds. He also ran on Bishop Alemany's 4x100m relay, contributing to their 42.06 to start the season.
The sophomore transferred to Bishop Alemany from Culver City High School, where he mainly focused on the 100m and 200m. After his strong performance in the 200m, he appeared eager to race a 200m again and eventually get the chance to race his former school.
