Division 1
Granada Hills Charter, in the midst of a strong season, went 1-3 at prelims led by senior Jocelyn Pacheco (pictured), whose 18:06.40 was by far the fastest of the meet. GHC sophomore Meztli Velazquez was next in that heat some 28 seconds back with senior teammate Naima Salazar another 16 seconds back.
Pacheco was second here last year and is the top returner, and Salazar was fourth. Senior Ava Baak, third last year while helping Palisades to the title, was second in her heat at prelims behind Hamilton senior Luciana Valencia.
Granada Hills had 25 points at last year's final to beat Palisades (50). Those two should battle it out again for division supremacy as well as State Meet berths.
Junior Kyra Morris, freshman Louisa Mammen, and junior Virginia O'Neill were the next girls across at prelims, all placing among the top six.
Grafield seophomore Kelia Naranjo-Champion ran low-19s at prelims for fourth in the heat won by GHC, the fourth-fastest time in the division.
Division 2
Venice senior Lidia Prokopovych-Shchepetkin ran 19:07.30 to edge runner-up Brynn Bogue, a sophomore at Bravo Medical Magnet, to win the division title last year. Bogue was out front at prelims, beating the defending champion by 74 seconds.
Canoga Park junior Angelina Valladares, third in D-3 last fall, won the other heat with the fastest time of the division 18:47.50.
Eagle Rock, the defending team champion, was led at prelims by juniors Elizabeth Corrigan and Tory Yetter, both top-eight finishers in their heat. Bravo was the runner-up last year. Behind Bogue is a pair of sophomores in Sofia Najarro and Angelique Morales. Canoga Park was a four-point winner over Reseda in D-3 last year.
Other Divisions
Sophomore Hannah Carlson of Northridge Academy is the defending champion in D-4. Mendez was four points better than Maywood CES in last year's final.
In D-5, junior Gabriela Nascimento won the title and led New West Charter to the division crown. Nascimento was nearly a minute faster than anyone in her qualifying heat last week, and some 40 seconds faster than Stern freshman Valerie Palma, who won the other heat.
New West put up 16 points in its qualifying heat with three sophomores following Nascimento among the top seven, Kahri Sivkov (third), Erin Mayfield (fifth), and Adeline Shassberger (seventh).
