Who Won Arcadia? We Scored The Meet

Unofficial team champions at Arcadia were the Buchanan girls, led by sophomore Sydney Sundgren (left) and senior Lauren Fowler (third from left), and the Fresno Central boys, behind the efforts of sophomore Terrell Johnson (second from left) and junior Jeremiah Walker (right). We made a run at scoring the 53rd Arcadia Invitational, just for fun. It should come as no surprise which teams came out on top.

The Buchanan girls, which won the CIF-State team title in 2019, are deep and talented. The Fresno Central boys are young and fast and versatile enough to make it a team title sweep for the Central Section.

We used the standard 16 CIF events, scored the top eight in 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 order. But, unlike CIF where there is a qualifying process to establish the finalists, we used invitational, seeded as well as open division results from Saturday sections, scoring the top eight marks overall. Points were divided equally in the event of ties, including running events where there was no other option.

Because of an unfortunate post-meet disqualification, we had to take a second pass at scoring the girls. Either way, it was no contest as Buchanan picked up points in seven events, including 24 from senior Lauren Fowler in the 100, 200, and long jump. Add Fowler's total to contributions by sophomore Sydney Sundgren (3200m), senior Alexa Dandridge (300mH), senior Helen Chu (TJ), and the 4x400 relay team gave Buchanan 42 points, 11 more than league rival Clovis North.

In the boys, Central picked up 29 in the individual sprints, points in both relays, and 15 more in the horizontal jumps to total 56 points, 21 more than runner-up Upland. Junior Cameron Tarver scored in the 200m and long jump, which he won; junior Jeremiah Walker scored in the 200 and 400, which he won; sophomore Imari Conley scored in the 200; those guys had a hand in both scoring relays (which included sophomore Terrell Johnson), and senior Devin Kelly scored in the triple jump.

There were 68 boys teams and 74 girls teams that scored at least one point. Congratulations to all teams and athletes who competed at Arcadia.

Listed are all schools with 10 or more points for boys and girls.

Note that this is MileSplitCA's interpretation of scoring the meet and is in no way associated with the 53rd Arcadia Invitational. Enjoy!
