Eighth-Grader Sadie Engelhardt Lowers All-Time No. 1 1,600m

One week after capturing the top eighth-grade 1,600m time in history at The Chandler Rotary Classic in Arizona, Sadie Engelhardt went out and did it again.

This time, the prodigious 14-year-old talent from Ventura, California, clocked a U.S. No. 12 time of 4:47.90 at the Buchanan Distance Classic on Saturday in Clovis, winning the middle school girls field -- though it should be noted that Engelhardt would have won the varsity field with that performance, too.

Overall, it's been an incredible few weeks for Engelhardt, who has featured exclusively at the 1,600m or mile distance over the season. She's raced just four times in 2021, too.

But each time out, she's improved just a little bit more.

Engelhardt, who competes for Valley United Track Club, has logged times of 4:54.08, 4:53.01, 4:48.73 and now 4:47.90.

According to this International Records database, Mary Decker secured the 14-year-old world mile record of 4:40.1 in 1973.
