Sacramento XC Coach Arrested For Alleged Sexual Assault

A former cross country and track coach in the Sacramento area has been arrested on suspicion of felony sexual assault involving a student, the Sacramento Police Department announced Wednesday in a release.

Aaron Rios, 38, who recently resigned after five seasons at St. Francis Catholic High School in Sacramento, was arrested Tuesday, The Sacramento Bee newspaper reported.

Rios is being held at the Sacramento County Main Jail, facing multiple felony charges including lewd acts with a child victim aged 14 or 15, according to a court filing. His bail was initially set at $100,000.

The Bee reported that St. Francis officials sent an email Wednesday morning notifying parents that administration on Saturday received "a report of inappropriate contact between St. Francis cross country and track coach, Aaron Rios, and a St. Francis student."

The Bee, citing information from Rios' bio on the St. Francis website -- since removed -- reported that Rios had coached cross country at the private school since 2015, the last four years as the head coach. He had also been the school's track coach since June 2019.

Rios, according to the bio, had previously coached at Del Campo High School between 2011 and 2014. He also coached privately for the Sac Elite Youth Running Club.

During his tenure at St. Francis, Rios' girls cross country team won four consecutive CIF-Sac-Joaquin Section Division II titles, and went on to place fourth in Division II at the CIF-State Championships in 2016, sixth in 2017 and sixth last fall.
