When we first dove into researching the top 3200-meter and two-milers in California high school history, our initial standard was finding programs that averaged less than 9:10 for their top four in school history. That 9:10 average led us to find 69 programs in California history that have done so!
To break into the Top 50, a program had to average under 9:07. To break into the Top 10? A 8:58.75 average did the trick!
Yep, that is an AVERAGE of the school's top four!
Top Program
With no surprise, the men of Jesuit not only dominated the 4x1600 Dream Teams but Coach Walt Lange's incredible program dominated here as well. With six boys delving into that exclusive sub-9:00 minute territory, the Marauders' average is a mind boggling 8:49.71!
Altogether, 16 programs average less than 9-minutes for their top four! And, our top 'B' team -- Jesuit -- also averaged under 9:00 and would place 16th here.
Jesuit's 'C' team would break into the top 40 in averaging below a 9:05!
More B Teams
Our second strongest 'B' team may come as a surprise to many, but it is Willow Glen, averaging a stellar 9:07.21. Dana Hills' second group also averages less than a 9:09 with Carlmont and Canyon (Canyon Country) also representing well within our top 80 squads with their 'B' teams.
Carlmont's school record is 9:05.26 yet it has seven others within six seconds of that time.
Sidenote
Anyone out there aware of a fourth 3200-meter runner that represents El Cajon Valley with sub-9:35 credentials? They boast three boys under the nine-minute threshold but we were unable to locate a fourth that would allow them to break into our Top 50!
