The good folks at MaxPreps identified 23 football players from California high schools who were among the 255 selected last week during the three-day NFL Draft.
MileSplitCA has identified 11 of those with a track profile in the database. Of those, five only participated in track for one season, according to their database profile, with a couple of others only competing in a meet or two.
Among those on the list is Utah State quarterback Jordan Love from Bakersfield Liberty (CS), who became one of the biggest storylines of Thursday's first round when he was selected by the Green Bay Packers.
Love, considered one of the top quarterback prospects available, was selected by a team that already has an elite quarterback in Chico Pleasant Valley HS product Aaron Rodgers.
According to his profile on MileSplit, Love participated in track in both 2013 and 2014 with a focus on the high jump (6-0 PR), long jump (18-2) and triple jump (39-0).
While Love's track numbers are far from stellar, a few of the Golden State football draftees did make an impact outdoors in the spring.
- Terrell Burgess (San Marcos/SD) was a league champion sprinter who qualified for the San Diego Section trials.
- Cole McDonald (Sonora/SS) was a sprinter who qualified for the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 prelims in 2015 and 2016.
- Mykal Walker (Vacaville/SJ), a hurdler, was a two-time league champion and Sac-Joaquin Section Masters qualifier in both 2014 and 2015.
- Ashtyn Davis (Santa Cruz/CC) was a top 110-meter hurdler who medaled at the 2014 CIF-State Meet.
The most successful of all of the football/track athletes now connected with a NFL team is Javelin Guidry, who spent his senior year at Vista Murrieta (SS).
Guidry, a defensive back from Utah, wasn't drafted but signed as a free agent with New York Jets.
Guidry won the CIF-State 100-meter title in a blistering 10.13w (3.8) in 2017 a year after winning the 100m title at the UIL Championships in Texas. Guidry's CIF-winning time is the fastest all-conditions time ever by a California high school sprinter.
According to the verified NFL Twitter account, Guidry ran 4.29 in the 40-yard dash and did 21 reps on the bench at the league's scouting combine over the winter. That was the most reps by a player with a sub-4.30 40yd since 2003.
Another undrafted free agent who signed is Khalil Dorsey from Colony (SS). Dorsey, a defensive back from Northern Arizona who signed with the Baltimore Ravens, was a two-time State Meet medalist in the 110m hurdles as well as a State Meet qualifier in the long jump.
