- The competition matches the all-time marks in one section against those in another using dual meet scoring and individual event participation rules.
- There are six sections that range between 101 and 198 schools: Central, San Diego, Los Angeles, Central Coast, North Coast, Sac-Joaquin. Those are the six in the dual meet competition.
- There are three sections with a combined total of just 105 schools: San Francisco, Oakland, Northern. Those sections don't have the depth of athletes to be able to compete in this event. Sorry, but they are not part of the dual meet tournament.
- And then there's the Southern Section, which includes 37 percent of the schools in the state. We have something special lined up down the road to involve the beast that is our friends in the SS.
- Meets are held at neutral sites on a perfect 70-degree evening with no wind. Scoring is based on the best all-time marks from each section. Times may be converted. Altitude is not a factor.
- Sections are limited to three entries per event and athletes are limited to four individual events. Dual and double-dual meet scoring is 5-3-1 for 1st through 3rd with a 5-0 score for both relays. There is separate competition for boys and girls.
- Meets are presented in order of events with updated scoring after each event. The approximate conclusion of each field event is slotted throughout the track event schedule.

4x100 Relay
Led by speedy Stephen Hayes, University City clocked a 40.66 in 1998 to top the 41.15 by the 1992 Mt. Pleasant foursome, getting the meet off to a fast start. Score: SD 5, SJ 0. Running total: SD 5, CC 0.
1600m
Although the 1600 was unknown at the time, few could argue that Chula Vista's Tim Danielson would be just as unbeatable as his 3:58.1 converted mile remains the fastest ever run in the state. University City's Mac Fleet (4:01.49 in 2009) edged teammate AJ Acosta of El Camino (4:02.55). Score: SD 9, SJ 0. Running total: SD 14, CC 0.
110m High Hurdles
If ever a section had a weak event, this is it for San Diego. Montgomery's Reggie DePass (13.86) had no chance against the likes of Jefferson's Isaac Carson (13.67 in 1991), Jovesa Naivalu (Fremont 1996) and Pinole Valley's Rashad Smith (13.81 in 2007). Score: CC 9, SD 0. Running score: SD 14, CC 9
High Jump
Obviously one of the Central Coast's best events as Mt. Pleasant's Darius Carbin (7-4 ½ in 2016) and Overfelt's Jeff Rogers (7-3 in 1985) went 1-2 against Madison's Frank Schiefer (7-2 in 1979). CC takes the early lead. Score: CC 8, SD 1. Running score: CC 17, SD 15.
400m
With the North Salinas Harrison brothers (Calvin at 45.25 in 1993) and Alvin (46.25 in 1993) leading the way and Cubberly's Bill Green (45.51 in 1979) sandwiched in between, CC runs away with this event even without including the great Lee Evans (46.6 at Overfelt in 1965). Score: CC 9, SD 0. Running score: CC 26, SD 15.
100m
Look at the State Meet record-holders: Southwest's Riley Washington (10.30 in1992) and Madison's Kenan Christon (10.30 in 2019) and you can see why San Diego did well. Archbishop Riordan's Tony Miller (10.41 in 1987) edged football star Reggie Bush (Helix/SD, 10.42) for third. Score: SD 8, CC 1. Running score: CC 27, SD 23.
Long Jump
Soquel's Johnny Cleveland hit 26-feet even in 1984 to take this event over San Diego High's Doyle Steel (25-5.25 in 1966) and University City's Jerome Price (25-5 in 1990, with a scratch at 26-plus at Mt. SAC). Score: CC 5, SD 4. Running score: CC 32, SD 27.
800m
Bob Hose's 1:49.2 for 880 yards in 1964 converts to 1:48.6 to give the Madison runner this event. Right behind was Chula Vista Hilltop's Terry Rogers at 1:49.8 in 1966 with Los Altos' Rick Brown a step back at 1:50.0 in 1970. All of the leaders were at 880 yards. San Diego regains the lead. Pole Vault
There was a lot of noise coming from the pole vault pit and all of it was from CC fans. Los Gatos' Nico Weiler (17-6.25 in 2007), St. Francis' Casey Roche (17-5 in 2006) and St. Francis' Scott Toney (17-4 this year in Reno) led a convincing sweep to lead again. Score: CC 9, SD 0. Running score: CC 42, SD 35.
Shot Put
With state record-holder Brent Noon of Fallbrook (76-2 in 1990) untouchable, the Border City sweeps with Morse's Darius Savage (66-3.25 in 2006) and El Cajon Valley's Curt Hampton (65-11.50 in 1974) topping Fremont's Steve Wilhelm (65-10 in 1967). Score: SD 9, CC 0. Running score: SD 44, CC 42.
300m Hurdles
You'd think a section that had two-time Olympic gold medalist Felix Sanchez of University City would dominate but he doesn't even score. Granite Hills' Jeff Hunter (36.25 in 2001) leads the way by an eyelash over Fremont's JoVesa Naivalu (36.26 in 1996) and Independence's John Montgomery (36.43 in 1988). Score: SD 5, CC 4. Running score: SD 49, CC 46.
200m
Although not quite as dominant as the 100, Madison's Kenan Christon (20.55 in 2019) still leads the way. North Salinas' Calvin Harrison (20.57 in 1993) and Valley Christian's Ruben Williams (20.84 in 2002) trailed. Before last year, CC would have swept with Billy Green (20.91 in 1979). Score: SD 5, CC 4. Running score: SD 54, CC 50.
Discus Throw
Check out state champs and you'll see San Diego fares well here. Morse's Darius Savage (212-1 in 2006) swept the shot and discus that year and The Bishop's School's Daniel Schaerer (206-5) won in 2004. Los Gatos' Nik Kay (204-10 in 2003) prevents a sweep. Score: SD 8, CC 1. Running score: SD 62, CC 51.

San Diego's rich history plays big here as Patrick Henry's Thom Hunt (8:42.2 in 1976), El Camino's A.J. Acosta (8:43.27 in 2006) and Clairemont's Dale Fleet (8:50.8 in 1971) led a 1-2-3 sweep to clinch the team title. Score: SD 9, CC 0. Running score: SD 71, CC 51.
Triple Jump
Rancho Buena Vista's Von Ware (52-0 in 1994), Oceanside's Willie Banks (51-3 in 1974) and El Camino's Dokie Williams (51-2.25 in 1977) were too much for the Central Section. Score: SD 9, CC 0. Running score: SD 80, CC 51.
4x400 Relay
Although it didn't make any difference, San Diego Morse put the cap on a tremendous final four events by running away with the 4x400 relay behind Lydell Burston to clock a 3:10.80 in 1996. Independence gave it a go but fell short with a 3:14.14 from 1988. Score: SD 5, CC 0.
