Jamar Marshall Stories: The Story Behind This Video Series

JAMAR MARSHALL STORIES

The story behind this video series and hub to all nine installments.

WORKOUT WEDNESDAY

--

In early March, before the suspension of the 2020 outdoor season, MileSplitCA visited with Stockton St. Mary's senior Jamar Marshall, the California state record holder in the 110-meter hurdles and the 2019 CIF-State Meet champion.

At the time of our visit, a Friday, Marshall was still involved in the state basketball tournament, had only competed in one hurdles race, and was toggling between training for the track season and basketball practice.

Marshall had scored a career-high 34 points the night before in leading the St. Mary's basketball team into the CIF-State regional semifinals. The next day, he was originally scheduled to run a hurdles race at the Sacramento State High School Track Classic and that night play in the hoops semi.

Late Friday, St. Mary's head track coach, Myke Lewis, sent a text explaining that he had a talk with Jamar and his younger brother Jadyn -- a sophomore on both the basketball and track teams -- to skip the track meet and focus on the basketball game.

The Marshall brothers combined for 23 points in that game but St. Mary's lost by two. Basketball season was over. It was on to track season.

Unfortunately, that lasted less than a week.

In this series of videos we're calling 'Jamar Marshall Stories', Marshall talks about his early days of track, his first coach, the time when he almost quit, winning the state title, 'losing' while setting the state record with the No. 3 time ever by a high school athlete, training, why he chose Arizona State for college, and other topics.

We also meet St. Mary's hurdles coach John Johnson, a former world-class hurdler, and get glimpses of Jadyn, also an outstanding hurdler who reached the 300m hurdles final at the 2019 State Meet and will no doubt challenge Jamar's records in the years to come.

This series was developed from that one meeting, a light hurdles training session at that.
