Cool Breeze Invite Ready to Bring on the Heat

BOYS PREVIEW

At a quick glance, one may get excited to see that Great Oak and Newbury Park are both slated to compete on the boys' side.  But, both squads will wisely rest out their top varsity lineups for greater battles ahead.  These are two of the best in the United States and plan on showing their true cards once November comes around.

In that final race of the evening, Claremont looks to defend its championship from a year ago.  The Wolfpack motored on to take third place at the California State Meet for Division 2.  As they crossed with a 99-point victory a year ago, they will have to hold off some impressive teams coming in for the challenge.

Do NOT overlook Great Oak's 'B' squad as we stated on our Southern Section preview that this 'back-up' squad would still be considered the favorite to defend the program's Division 1 title!   Cathedral is the favorite to capture the Division 4 title this November and will also be in the mix.  Highland's boys are coming off an impressive showing at last weekend's Fastback Shootout as well.  We also get a look at our top squad in Division 5, Viewpoint.  A strong Poway boys team also make the trip up from the San Diego Section.

Other squads that we have projected to be bound for the 2019 State Meet include: Agoura (Div. 3), Crescenta Valley (Div. 1), Fillmore (Div. 4), Flintridge Prep (Div. 5), Foothill Tech (Div. 4), La Serna (Div. 1), Laguna Beach (Div. 4), Moorpark (Div. 3), Oak Park (Div. 3), Royal (Div. 3), Simi Valley (Div. 2), St. John Bosco (Div. 3), and St. Margaret's (Div. 5).  Not all of these squads are locked into competing in the last and fastest race.  But, the non-seeded boys' varsity race is as competitive as well while allowing Division 3-5 to compete against one another at 7:34 pm and Division 1-2 combining for a 7:54 pm start.

Individually, Crescenta Valley's Dylan Wilbur (pictured) looks to make the quick trip over to the Rose Bowl (also primary training grounds for him) to defend his 2018 victory as he crossed with the 14:26.7 victory!  Highland junior Daniel Rodriguez, opened up well last week while also watch for Quartz Hills' Cameron Smith and La Quinta junior Raen Reyes.  The Ayala duo of Yael Grimaldi and Ko Akabori both looked sharp last weekend as well.  After Wilbur a year ago, the top underclassmen returning is Claremont junior Jack Keough-Lansford who rolled to a 14:50.7 time.  Cathedral's Tyriq Granillo also returns with his 14:56.2 clocking on this course.  Back from losing his 2018 season to injury, keep your eyes on Mira Costa's Billy Atkinson as well.
