Boys Countdown to XC Day 5: Maria Carrillo

The Pumas have one of the most complete profiles of any school in this countdown, with strong spring results serving to back up their returning cross country rankings. Maria Carrillo finished 6th in Division 3 in 2018 with six juniors and one senior in the top 7, which means they have a veteran team back with a serious sense of purpose for the upcoming season. It's actually even more incredible when you look down the roster: there were only 2 seniors in the top 20 for 5K last fall! After putting their top 3 returners at 4:21 or faster on the track, plus two more under 4:35, the Pumas have only one concern: the gap between that front three and the rest of the team. They have more than enough candidates to step up in their man pack, like Noe Vieyra (4:33 this spring) and Jacob Donohue (9:54 for 3200). With a good summer, this could be the best team in the North Coast Section and a state title contender in Division 3. Given how well this program has been improving over the last three years, I wouldn't bet against those outcomes.
