The Cougars definitely belong in this countdown, but placing them at 20 depends on one projection: based on their stellar history of year-round improvement, I am expecting them to shore up their depth before the 2019 season. That's the only real flaw in Campolindo's returning team - they have a monster top 3 that are essentially interchangeable, but they have two noticeable gaps in their top 7. The improvement of Mia Travis and Emma Smith during track season could be just the thing; both ran in the 5:30's and low 12's after not making the top 7 last fall, and if they can push for varsity spots in 2019 than the Cougars will be back in contention. And that's what Campolindo does - this program puts out championship-caliber teams season after season, as evidenced by their #1 overall improvement rating over the last seven years (more on this in August). In the last 6 state meets going backward, the Cougars have finished 3rd, 1st, 6th, 5th, 2nd, and 1st. With 6 of 7 returning from their bronze-medal finish in 2018, this team has a chance to return to the top of the podium in Division 3.
