Performing at her best when it counted most,
Jocelynn Budwig earned the MileSplitCA's Top Field Performance of the 2019 season.

A 2019 graduate of Fowler High in the Central Section who will compete collegiately at Auburn University, Budwig is just the fifth girl in California history to win both the discus throw and the shot put at the same CIF-State Track and Field Championship meet.

At the California State Championships, held at Buchanan High in Clovis where she also earned five Central Section titles over her prep career, Budwig won the discus throw with the second-best throw of her stellar four-year high school career (171-10) and her 2019 best.  She came back later in the meet to hit her personal record to win the shot put title (49-02.75) for the second year in a row.  This was all achieved despite nursing a hamstring injury that forced her to limit her attempts throughout the two-day competition.

Budwig was a State Meet medalist all four years in the discus, but her opening effort of 171-10 in the first round of the finals all but secured her first State title in the event.  Only two others would threaten that mark but she watched from the sideline the final two rounds as those other two girls would fall short in trying to move Budwig off that top spot.

On Saturday at the State Meet finals, Budwig's title in the shot put was never in doubt as she led the entire competition.  After setting a new personal best at Friday's Prelims (49-0.25) by over 16 inches, Budwig still had another great day ahead of her.  Leading the entire competition, her 49-02.75 cemented the title and for good measure, she produced another 49-plus foot effort on her final attempt when the title was already secured.

Budwig's discus throw ranked her atop the California State lists while placing her second in the United States.  Her shot put best was also the top mark on the season in the state while elevating her up to third in the nation.  Her discus PR from the 2018 State Meet Prelims of 174-02 ranks 16th in state history. Her shot put from this year's final, moved her up to 24th all-time in California state history.

To cap off the incredible performance at the California State Meet, Budwig was recently named the top California girls track and field athlete of 2019 by Gatorade!

She made this easy on us. When beginning to review the whole season of work, it became clear soon enough that no one would come close on any one day, or any one performance, to Budwig's accomplishments at the 2019 California State Track and Field Championships.
