The MileSplitCA All-State teams are subjective selections with strong consideration given to performances at the end of the season with results from the CIF-State Championships as the baseline for selection. Athletes winning individual events are guaranteed a spot among the 25-member first team and those achieving a top-six podium result are guaranteed mention among either the 25-member second team or the honorable mention list.

In fact, a top-seven finish at in a final at the State Meet guaranteed at least an honorable mention.

While results from the State Championships is the foundation for the team, other factors are considered once all event champions are slotted. Other factors include first team placement on a MileSplitCA class-specific all-state team, historic/record performance during the season, top placement at the section level, top ranking at the state and U.S. level, and versatility.
