ESCONDIDO -- The track at Richard F. Disney Memorial Field on the campus of Orange Glen High School will be abuzz this weekend for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Region 23 Track & Field Championships.

The meet, which conducts events across nine age divisions for boys and girls, serves as a qualifier for the AAU Junior Olympic Games, a national championship, scheduled July 27-Aug. 3 in Greensboro, NC.

This year's meet is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. both days and will function under a rolling schedule.

As a result of low registration, the multis were cancelled. Per meet management, all registered multis athletes will be waived into the Junior Olympic Games.

The 2018 Region 23 Championships was a showcase for young athletes who became familiar names to high school track fans, such as Colin Sahlman (Newbury Park), Caelyn Harris (Upland), Aaliyah McCormick (Scripps Ranch)Jaymie Ruskovich (Scripps Ranch) and a sprinter by the name of Kenan Christon (Madison).

Christon, of course, went on to rewrite sprint record books on the way to sweeping the 100m and 200m titles at the CIF-State Meet. Ruskovich and McCormick were key pieces to the Scripps Ranch girls 4x100 relay team that won the State Meet title. Sahlman became the MileSplitCA Freshman Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. And Harris blew away the field to win the State Meet title in the long jump.

Who among this weekend's standouts will emerge as stars on the next level? Only time will tell.
