2019 Sacramento Meet of Champions preview

1600 Meters

Girls Meet Record: Alex Kosinski Oak Ridge 4:38.15 2007 (5:45pm)
Boys Meet Record: Cooper Teare St. Joseph Notre Dame 4:07.78 2016 (5:55pm)

This race appears to be wide open and with cooperation from the weather should yield fast times for all the competitors. The two sub 5 minute 1600m runners in the field are Julia Heckey of McClatchy (4:55.24) and Cate Joaquin of St. Francis, Sacramento (4:58.62). They both recorded their times at the Stanford Invitational. Other runners to watch are Kaimei Gescuk of Carlmont (5:00.51), Kate and Emma Tavella of San Ramon Valley (5:00.80 and 5:00.90) and Kyra Pretre of Menlo (5:01.73). A couple of wild cards in the field are Eleanor Wikstrom of Skyline (5:06.32) and Isabella Fauria of Sacramento St. Francis (5:06.36). Fauria has been especially impressive anchoring several relays to victory at Stanford and Arcadia.

The favorite to win the boys' 1600m race will be Jesuit junior Matt Strangio. He was especially impressive at the Dublin Distance Fiesta where he rolled to a national leading 8:47.97 3200m. time. Since then, Strangio has been dealing with some aches and may now just be gearing up for the post-season. Nevada Union's Garrett Gough has the next fastest time at 4:16.35. Del Oro senior Brayden McLaughlin was a state meet qualifier this year and should not be overlooked. Jesuit junior Chase Gordon has excelled in the 800m this season and may be looking to drop a fast time here before going back to his bread and butter event for the postseason.
