Workout of a State Champion: Matt Strangio

MileSplitCA visited with some of the returning CIF-State Track and Field champions for the purpose of filming a regular practice to produce a series of videos we are calling 'Workout of a State Champion'. This is boys 3200 champion Matt Strangio, a junior at Jesuit HS in Sacramento.

Last June, as a sophomore, Strangio clinched the State 3200 title out-sprinting senior Justin Hazel over the final 150 meters. Strangio's winning time of 8:56.18 is the No. 2 returning time in California and the No. 1 returning time nationally among all boys in the Class of 2020.

Strangio not only heads into his junior season as the defending State champion for 3200 meters on the track, but in the fall he won the CIF-State Division I cross country title and placed eighth at Nike Cross Nationals.

MileSplitCA visited a Jesuit practice on Feb. 11, 2019 to film what was a Monday pre-season workout. In the video, we watch the Jesuit boys go through a 2x1K, 2x400 and 4x200 practice. The boys jog during a breaks between sets, and cool down with a casual three-mile run along a trail adjacent to the American River, which meanders not too far from campus.

In the video, we hear from Strangio and legendary distance coach Walt Lange. We also get a brief look at the St. Francis girls team, which trains on the Jesuit track, aptly named after Coach Lange.
