Former CIF Stars To Watch At NCAA DI Indoor

200 (Friday prelims/Saturday final)

Lauren Rain Williams (Oaks Christian/SS) is a sophomore at USC after transferring from Oregon. She is the No. 9 ranked qualifier (23.00). Williams won the CIF-State title in the 100m in 2016 (11.39) and ran the No. 3 time in the 200 (22.80) in state history. At Oregon last spring, Williams got as far as the NCAA semifinals in the 200m, running a wind-aided 22.84 for 12th place.

400 (Friday prelims/Saturday final) / 4x400 Relay (Saturday)

Tierra Robinson-Jones (Bishop O'Dowd/NC). Robinson-Jones, a freshman at Texas A&M, is qualified ninth in the open 400 (52.52) and is scheduled to run second leg on the Aggies' top-ranked 4x400 relay team (3:29.15). Robinson-Jones (Pat Rhames photo at right) was won of the stars of the CIF-State Championships last June, winning both the 200 and 400 titles. Kaelin Roberts (Carson/LA) is a sophomore at USC who won the CIF-State title in 2014 (52.52) and 2016 (52.28). She is the No. 7 qualifier (52.36 and has gone 52.25) and is also scheduled to anchor the Trojans' 4x400 relay team that is qualified fifth (3:30.43). Hannah Waller (Buchanan/CS), a junior at Oregon, was the 2015 State 400m champion (53.13). She is the No. 10 qualifier in the quarter.

3000m (Saturday) / 5000m (Friday)

Fiona O'Keeffe (Davis Senior/SJ) is qualified in both the 3000m and 5000m. O'Keefe, a sophomore at Stanford, is the No. 8 qualifier in the 3K (8:58.58) and the No. 13 qualifier in the 5K (15:35.77). She placed 10th in the 3K last year, running 9:10.54. O'Keefe, won the CIF-State title in the 3200m (10:12.02) in 2016. She finds herself in what is being called one of the all-time epic fields for the 5K. This is her first time running the 5K at the NCAA Indoor meet. She placed fifth for that distance at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships and was a U.S. junior national 5K winner in 2016.

High Jump (Saturday)

Erinn Beattie (Buena/SS) is the No. 7 qualifier in the high jump (1.83/6-0)  and No. 5 qualifier in the pentathlon (4,185). Beattie, a senior at UC Davis, was the 2015 State high jump champion (5-9). She is the first Aggie in DI history to qualify for the indoor championships. She tied for second, based on misses, in the high jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (5-11.50), earning first team All-American honors. She is the UC Davis record holder in the high jump (6-0.50), heptathlon (5,458) and pentathlon.

Pentathlon (both days)

Beattie will have a familiar face among the competitors in the pentathlon. Hope Bender (Newport Harbor/SS) is a senior at UC Santa Barbara who is the No. 5 qualifier (4,220). Bender recently set a personal best for points in winning her second consecutive UW Invitational title while moving temporarily up to No. 3 in the NCAA Indoor rankings.

Long Jump (Friday)

Two longtime combatants in the CIF-Southern Section, Destiny Longmire and Margaux Jones will face each other once again. Longmire (Rancho Verde/SS), a junior at Texas Christian, is the No. 5 qualifier (6.39/20-11.75). Jones (Redlands/SS), the 2014 State champion (20-4.75), is a senior at USC. She is the No. 10 qualifier (6.33/20-9.25). She was 12th here as a junior, jumping 19-8.75. Longmire transferred to TCU after beginning her collegiate career at San Jose State. As a Spartan, Longmire won Big West Conference long jump titles as both a freshman and a sophomore. Outdoors, she qualified for the NCAA Championships and earned second team All-America honors. Last month, she won her first Big 12 Conference indoor title. Jones, who has gone 20-10.75 for No. 8 on the Trojans' all-time outdoor list, is the school's indoor record holder (21-0.50). Her outdoor season was limited last spring by a back injury. 


Pole Vault (Saturday)

Rachel Baxter (Anaheim Canyon/SS) is a sophomore at Virginia Tech who is the No. 4 qualifier in the pole vault and has gone 4.47/14-8. She won the State Meet title in 2016 (14-2) and in 2017 (14-0). She is state record-holder at 14-5.50. As a freshman at Va Tech, Baxter qualified for the Indoor Championships las winter, placing 11th with a best of 4.21/13-9.75. Last month, Baxter won the ACC Indoor title with her Indoor Nats qualifying clearance, which broke the previous school record of 4.46.

Triple Jump (Saturday)

Ciynamon Stevenson (Great Oak/SS) is a junior at Texas A&M and the No. 12 qualifier in the triple jump (13.31/43-8). She placed 12th here last year as a sophomore. As a senior at Great Oak, Stevenson placed second at the State Meet (41-0.50). Stevenson is one of 15 Aggies who have qualified in 12 events for these Indoor Championships.

Weight Throw (Saturday)

Stamatia Scarvelis (Dos Pueblos/SS) is a senior at Tennessee who is the No. 2 qualifier in the weight throw (24.06/78-11.25). This is her third consecutive year qualifying for the Indoor Nats. She was fifth as a junior (22.17/72-9). She is a three-tie CIF-State champion in the shot put, winning the event in 2012-14, with a title-winning best of 52-2 in 2014.
