Alfred Chawonza announced Sunday night that he's committed to Texas Tech University. The St. Benedict's Prep senior is currently ranked US#1 in the 800m after his 1:50.57 performance at the Boston University Last Chance meet on February 24th.
Along with Texas Tech some other high end schools were in the running such as LSU, TCU, UCLA, and Penn State.
"Ultimately Texas Tech made him a very strong offer," Coach Dave Alfano stated, "Coach Kittley has done an incredible job over the years with his 800 meter runners, the business school has a great reputation, the weather is warm year round, and him, his family, and our coaching staff all felt like it was a great fit for him in so many ways!"
Chawonza has PRs of 49.95 in the 400m, 2:25.77 over 1000m, and a 4:08.16 1500m indoors 4:03.46 outdoors. He also ran a NJ#4 all-time 600m this season clocked at 1:19.61 during the Millrose Games.
He's got a great team around him as well with their 4x400m US#3, 4x800m US#1, and SMR US#5 with times of 3:19.48, 7:43.68, and 3:33.46.
