2018 Central Coast Section XC Detailed Preview

Division 1 Boys

Teams to Watch (Full Rankings)

With only the top two teams advancing to the state XC finals last year, the Central Coast Section had a very competitive section final with Bellarmine and Los Altos coming out on top. They both did quite well at the state meet which resulted in the section regaining one extra team qualifying spot for the upcoming season. The interesting part is that the Los Altos boys may be a slight favorite over the perennial power, Bellarmine boys. They finished 10th in the state and will be led by one of the top individuals in California, Owen MacKenzie. Bellarmine lost their top two runners from their potent 2017 lineup but no tears will be shed for this young talented group. The race for the last spot should be between a strong Homestead program and another program that has been among the best in the section, the Carlmont boys.

Athletes to Watch (Full Rankings)

Owen Mackenzie, Los Altos, is the top returning runner from last year's Division I race. He also finished 14th at the state meet after leading the monstrous Division I pack at the state meet through the 2-mile mark. On the track, MacKenzie was the surprise winner of the 3200-meter final in a lifetime best, 9:07.95. His main competitor should be Palo Alto senior, Henry Saul who finished in 3rd place at last year's section final. Saul was also impressive on the track with a best of 9:12.37 at the famed Arcadia Invitational. The next group of runners should include Carlmont senior Justin Hsu and Los Altos junior Adam Sage. Bellarmine sophomore Colin Peattie missed his entire freshman XC season but more than made up for it during this past TF season with 1:57.41/4:16.83/9:42.47 personal bests. The 1600 meter time is an all-time freshman best for CCS.
