Countdown to XC Day 14: Los Altos (CC)

Sometimes when you have a powerhouse for a sectional opponent, all you can do is keep getting better and wait them out. This looks like it might be the year for Los Altos, since perennial Central Coast Division 1 title contender Bellarmine Prep might have taken a step back after a big hit from graduation. But the Eagles are not just in position to contend by default - this is a VERY good team that has been building toward this point for over two years now, and 2018 is their year to try to bring all that effort to its full fruition. Los Altos only lost by 14 at last year's Central Coast finals and went on to finish 10th at the state meet, all with only one senior in their top 7! That makes them the 5th-best returning team from the state meet, counting all divisions together. Owen Mackenzie is a budding star: he is the #4 returner from the Division 1 state meet, and he followed that up with marks of 4:19 and 9:08 on the track this past spring. The Eagles have some depth, too, although like most teams they would definitely benefit from a little more competition for spots in their top 7. And while 2018 might be their best opportunity to make a run at the podium in Clovis, there is enough young talent on this squad to feel confident that Los Altos will be back in the CCS hunt in 2019.

The purpose of the Countdown To XC is not to predict the top 30 teams in the state for the upcoming season (although we certainly hope that the top 15-20 teams are included in the countdown at some point). The goal is to recognize thirty teams to watch as cross country begins, using data to uncover squads with strengths that stand out from the pack. The countdown is also not meant to be in a strict order, because it's impossible to sort out several teams of similar strength at this point of the season.
