Countdown to XC Day 26: Mayfield Girls

Let's get the bad news out of the way: Mayfield has lost several important contributors from the squad that finished 4th in Division 4 in 2017. Coach Eric Sun has left the program, as have three of the Cubs' top 6 runners from that team (including McKenna Smith, 5th at the state meet). Fortunately, there is plenty of good news, starting with the continued rise of superstar Audrey Suarez. The rising sophomore was 2nd in the Southern Section finals and 3rd at the state meet in the fall, then went on to clock 4:47 and 10:29 during the spring season, placing 5th at the ultracompetitive track state championship in the former race. Depth is a big concern for this 2018 Mayfield team (understandably so), but if they can maintain the team culture that let to their 8th-place ranking for improvement among all California teams over the last three years, the Cubs could be contenders in Division 4 again.

The purpose of the Countdown To XC is not to predict the top 30 teams in the state for the upcoming season (although we certainly hope that the top 15-20 teams are included in the countdown at some point). The goal is to recognize thirty teams to watch as cross country begins, using data to uncover squads with strengths that stand out from the pack. The countdown is also not meant to be in a strict order, because it's impossible to sort out several teams of similar strength at this point of the season.
