For La Serna, making the Southern Section finals in 2017 was a big deal: the Lancers hadn't raced that late in cross country season in at least 5 years. When you factor that in, and consider there was only one senior in their top 7, you can understand how the team ended up not racing particularly well on that second-to-last Saturday in November. But with 6 of 7 returning and three seniors leading the way in 2018, you can bet that this team is motivated to not just make it to the finals! Returning 3 Mile rankings show that the talent is there for this team to contend for a state meet berth, but by itself that would not be enough data. La Serna also had solid results on the track, particularly in the 1600 (look for Andrew Hernandez to compete with Jesse Montez and Marco Perez up front based on spring times). There is also depth on this team, which helps with the long grind through the Southern Section championship season. The biggest factor standing in the Lancers' way is out of their control: Southern Section Division 1 is off the charts this year, and there will definitely be 2 or 3 teams that don't get to Clovis but could have been top 10 or even top 8 there. So that makes La Serna a sleeper pick for 2018, a team that definitely bears watching.
