Countdown to XC Day 30: Cathedral Boys

The defending Division 4 state champs aren't going anywhere! The Phantoms did lose two seniors from that title-winning squad (including Alexander Cantu, who ran #1 for them at the state meet), but they return strong front-runner Tyriq Granillo (4:22 this spring) and a VERY deep pack. That's always a sign of future success: Cathedral  doesn't have to depend on 1 or 2 particular runners to step up this season, as they have at least 5 young men that could move into the last two spots in their top 7 and push the runners in the top 5. There could be as many as 4 seniors on this year's squad, which should provide leadership and motivation for a run at back-to-back titles. Watch out for Andrew Canty, who outran his older brother in the 3200 on the track.

The purpose of the Countdown To XC is not to predict the top 30 teams in the state for the upcoming season (although we certainly hope that the top 15-20 teams are included in the countdown at some point). The goal is to recognize thirty teams to watch as cross country begins, using data to uncover squads with strengths that stand out from the pack. The countdown is also not meant to be in a strict order, because it's impossible to sort out several teams of similar strength at this point of the season.
