Five New Yorkers heading to Trinidad and Tobago

This year athletes who competed at the USATF Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon at the end of June had a chance to qualify for the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships held in Trinidad and Tobago this coming weekend.

 

Four college level athletes and one high schooler will head to the island nation to compete. Not only did all of these athlete attend high school in New York State, but three of the four college athlete attend either Syracuse University or Manhattan College.

400 meter hurdles (U. Southern California)

Natalie Busby - New Paltz, N.Y.
3000 meter steeplechase (Syracuse University)

Joseph Whelan - Hamburg, N.Y.
3000 meter steeplechase (Syracuse University)

The 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championship will showcase many of the top international junior athletes, July 31-August 2 in Trinidad and Tobago.

 

Held at Hasley Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad, the Pan Am Junior Athletics Championships are open to athletes age 16 to 19 as of December 31, 2009.

 

Last month's U.S. Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Eugene, Ore. served as the U.S. selection meet for the Pan Am Championships. Eugene featured some of the top junior athletes in the country and the top finishers will represent the red, white and blue in Trinidad. This year's Team USA squad will look to best the 48 medals won by Team USA at the 2007 Pan Am Junior Athletics Championships.
