California's best in Track & Field reconvene at El Camino College this Saturday for the annual Masters Meet. After years of pleas for change, the section has moved the affair to a Saturday, moving away from its traditional Friday night schedule. Since moving to a divisional format in 1973, the Southern Section has employed a Masters Meet that brings together that top individuals and relay squads from the all-divisional finals to determine which entries will represent the section at the following week's California State Track & Field Championships.
This meet serves as the Southern Section's qualifying meet for the State finals.
For the best, it's all about qualifying and moving onward to the ultimate destination - Clovis Buchanan High and the California State Meet. For others, it's about fighting for one of the six automatic spots and/or meeting an at-large standard. The standard is a combination of the average 9th place qualifying marks into the State Meet final from the previous three seasons.
In 2007, the section expanded the field and distance events to twelve entries. Later, the section was also granted a sixth automatic entry to go along with those that meet the standard.
