2018 Sacramento Meet of Champions Preview

1600 Meters
Girls Meet Record: Alex Kosinski Oak Ridge 4:38.15 2007
Boys Meet Record: Cooper Teare St. Joseph Notre Dame 4:07.78 2016

The top four competitors in the girls' field are very clear. Maddy Denner of Oak Ridge was the state champion in this event last year, roaring to a 4:44.89 personal best. She appears to have recovered from a few nagging injuries and last week recorded a best of 10:08.01 to win the Mt. SAC Relays 3200m race. She will come into this meet with a lot of confidence and will be tough to beat. Sister Elena has also been impressive and will look to lock up a top-two finish for the Denner sisters. Olivia O'Keeffe of Davis has been very impressive during the postseason and will be looking to start her charge here. Alyssa Brewer of California

Last year, the 1600m was changed to a mile so that St. Joseph Notre Dame runner Coooper Teare could get one more attempt at a sub 4 minute mile. He was able to run 3:59.80 through 1600m so technically he was able to get that sub 4 effort. This year, the distance will once again go back to 1600m. The favorite is defending 800m champion Jett Charvet. He will definitely have some worthy challengers from the SJS including Karl Winter, Matt Strangio and Collin Ullrich. A couple of NCS runners will also look to break into the top 3 in this race with Munir Kabbara and Connor Livingston of De La Salle.
