Flo50 Girls Team Rankings Countdown

5.

High expectations and perhaps equal aspirations follow Buchanan (California), which returns its top five from the team that finished third at the California Interscholastic Federation Division I championships a season ago. That starts with the program's 1-2 combo of Smith and Lowe, who paired to form one of the best scoring duo's in the state -- they also both went sub-5 minutes and sub-11 minutes in the 1600m and 3200m in the spring. The track season went well for Buchanan, as they clocked six athletes under 5:20 -- the best overall performance by a team at the distance in the nation. The team certainly will make a case to win its state meet, but could also earn an automatic qualifier to NXN as well. Find out more about the team below.

Buchanan (California) High coach Brian Weaver answered a few questions about his upcoming season. See his answers below.

How long have you coached at your school?

I have been a coach at Buchanan since it opened in 1991. I've been the head coach in 1999-2000 and 2010 until present

What is your meet schedule this fall?

We try to have three major meets for us, starting off with Woodbridge, Clovis and Folsom. We have three other local meets: Kingsburg, Mt Whitney and John Seaman.

How has your summer training gone for your team?

Training has gone pretty well. The athletes sit down with the coaching staff in June and come up with an individual training plan. This allows each athlete to take ownership of their summer mileage. The team uses this time to come together and start working as one group.

What do you focus on during the summer months?

We try to focus on what it will take to get their end of the season goals accomplished. That includes developing a strong base, which means we have to be mindful considering we had a long track season -- we had five competing in the state track meet.

Who are your team captains or leaders and what stands out about them as examples for the rest of their teammates?

The top six all have great leadership, as each is different from the other. It makes them a complete team.

Who are some new faces who will make an impact on your team this year? (i.e. freshmen, transfers, runners who have improved a lot)

Senior Sydney Fox has made the biggest jump from last year.

What are some staple workouts your team does during the season?

Tempos,  vVO2. We have a training pace we call 'Buchanan Pace,' which Martin Simpson has developed over the years. We also do a timed run, then hit the track for 3x300, 200, 100 with a jog rest.

What will be the biggest reason why your team is successful this season?

Their desire to be the best and run to their best ability.  When we become one team

What will be the biggest obstacle or challenge facing your team this season?

Keep them focused as the season gets long and always healthy

How would you describe your team's culture?

We a one big family that works for each other

What are your top three goals for the team this fall?

As a coach, I want more kids running on the team, break the section team time record and have them reach their personal goals.
