Elena Bruckner's Team USA Experience in Poland

Friday:

My roommate and fellow discus thrower Kiana and I woke up early to go watch the men's javelin trials. We painted our stomachs so that we were the American flag. We also snuck a trash can out of the hotel room to use as a rally drum. We missed breakfast since we were running late to get to the meet so once we got there I bought some ice cream. Hey, I was done competing, don't judge!

We took the trolley home and on the way back to our hotel, we stopped at 2 different bakeries, a candy shop, a grocery store, and an authentic polish store where there were tea cups, jewelry, and fancy blankets. At the second bakery I had THE BEST pizza I have ever had in my life! Since the places we went to were local shops, very few people spoke English. Ordering things consisted of a lot of pointing and hand gestures. I even got some carrots to snack on at a little farmers market/roadside stand. Everything here is so inexpensive. I got a hefty bag of bulk candy for about 7 Polish złoty, which is less than 2 USD.

We dressed up again in red white and blue to cheer on the athletes in the afternoon session. While we were there, I traded jackets and jerseys with a german shot putter. I also traded a shirt with an Australian heptathlete. Everyone was trying to leave the track at the same time so it was tough getting on the trolley. Once we were on, it was super full. We were playing music and people started free-styling. It was pretty lit!
