California State Track and Field Meet: Field Events Preview

Discus

Girls Favorite: Elena Bruckner Valley Christian SJ (CCS) 182'8"
Leading Contenders: Kendall Mader Nebury Park (SS) 164'4", Ronna Stone Valley Christian SJ (CCS) 158'10" & Hannah Chappell Oakdale (SJS) 151'2"
State Meet Record: Anna Jelmini Shafter (CE) 186'9" 2009

We have a bit of an unusual situation with this event as the national leader, Elena Bruckner of Valley Christian SJ may not be the favorite. She threw her 182'8" national leader at her league final but since then has finished 2nd to teammate Ronna Stone at both CCS competitions. Kendall Mader has the 2nd best throw in CA and won the SS Masters meet. Hannah Chappell of Oakdale seems to thrive at this point in the season with a personal best 151'2" to win the SJS Masters meet and an even more impressive 2nd place finish at last year's state meet. The winner should come from one of those throwers and who can catch one during one of their 6 attempts.
Boys Favorite: Malik McMorris (above courtesy of Leonard Ortiz) Mater Dei (SS) 194'8"
Leading Contenders: Charles Lenford Oceanside (SDS) 191'7", Michael Pertusati Los Osos (SS) 192'8", Nick Coghill Valencia (SS) 190'1" & Darrin Paulo Grant 181'11"
State Meet Record: Bo Taylor Newport Harbor (SS) 213'7"

At last year's meet, Mater Dei won the team title powered by Curtis Godin and Malik McMorris. McMorris finished in 4th place in both the shot put and discus. This year, he will aim for a higher finish in this event. He has the best throw in CA which took place at the Arcadia Invitational. He won the hotly contested SS Masters meet with a best of 188'8". The best throw coming into this competition belongs to San Diego Section champion Charles Lenford of Oceanside (191'7"). Other noteworthy throwers include Michael Pertusati of Los Osos (192'8"), Nick Coghill of Valencia (190'1") and last year's 2nd place finisher, Darrin Paulo of Grant (181'11").
