CA Indoor State Meet Day 1 Highlights

The California Indoor State meet (photo courtesy of McKinleyville coach, Jason Lewis) has been gaining momentum over the past few seasons and based on last night's performances, it seems like an all-out assault on the meet records is at hand. In the relays, Poway TC won Section 5 with 76.23 to take the Girls 4 x 145 Meter Relay. Carson TC won the Boys version of that race winning the 8th and final section with a time of 66.48. Oaks Christian TC just edged out Great Oak TC in the Girls 4 x 800 Meter Relay 9:41.26 to 9:41.63. Nordhoff TC won the Boys 4 x 800 Meter Relay with a little more distance to spare at 8:09.21 over Corona TC.

In the girls 600 Yard Run, senior Chloe Jenkins of St. Mary's College TC crushed the competition with a new meet record, 1:25.03. The previous record was held by Mikaela Smith of Clovis North who also happens to be the two-time California State Meet 800 meter champion. Both runners are seniors this year and look for them to lock horns during the outdoor season.

In the boys 600 Yard Run, it was two runners from the state of Nevada taking center stage as 400m./800m. specialist, Connor Ross, outdistanced future decathlete Corey Reid 73.72 to 73.96. Both times dipped under the previous record of Joe Herrera (74.08) from last year's meet. Very impressive effort for Ross as he was running his 2nd event of the day after anchoring his team's 4 x 800m. relay and having to hold off Reid and his 47.15 400m. personal record.

Kimberly Coscia (South TC) proved to be the class of the field in the girls 2 Mile Run as she raced around the smallish indoor track 22 times to set a new meet record of 10:53.94. She finished ahead of 3 Great Oak runners (Evelyn Mandel, Kiyena Mandel, Sandra Kay Pflughoft) who finished in the next 3 places as they stacked up the points to hold their team in first place in the team title chase. The previous record holder was Jessie Petersen (11:06.75) although last year's winner Haley Dorris would have easily dipped under that record without the meet officials miscounting the laps during that race.

Austin Lay (Morro Bay TC) was the 6th place finisher at the 2014 State Cross Meet in the Division IV race and was the winner here in a new meet record, 9:25.98. The previous record holder was Justin Vilhauer's who set his mark (9:27.94) in the 2010 season. Lay out-dueled Kaleb Kunes of the Buena TC who also dipped under the old meet record with a 9:26.24. 3rd place finisher Spencer Dodds of the Great Oak TC easily won the first heat with 9:34.27 and may have pushed Lay and Kunes if he was placed in their heat as well.

In the field, two of the best long jumpers in California matched up with Greg Vann of the Rio Mesa TC edging out Joey Souza of Kingsburg TC 23'0" to 22'10". Both jumpers hold personal bests above 24 feet with Souza bombing a wind aided 25'7" at the 2014 Mt. SAC Invite. For the girls, last year's CA state meet 3rd place finisher, Tara Davis-Agoura TC, took the crown here with a new meet, 19'4.5". That was the only meet record set in the field events during the first day of competition.

In the Boys Pole Vault, Jacob Bowler of the Del Oro TC was the only competitor to make the winning height of 15'6". Three other vaulters (Luke Newman, Steven French, Barrett Weiss) cleared 15'0". Chianne Warner of the William J. Knight TC won the Girls High Jump with a jump of 5'6" over Jessica Lange of the Mission Viejo TC who also cleared the same height but with more attempts.

Today's events are already underway. Check out the meet preview for the top competitors from today as well as another recap tomorrow highlighting many of the top athletes.
