Everything you should know before the state meet

The state meet is right around the corner, and we now have an idea of how the races might play out. This year will have a bigger field than previous ones because each division is now taking sixteen teams as opposed to twelve, as well as the top ten individuals in each region that aren’t on qualifying teams.

A short review of the regional meets: Region I was the only three mile course, and despite being initially mistaken for a 5k the times were still rolling. Madeleine Reed led a deep field and won with a time of 16:51. We hadn’t seen much of Safiya Belbina this season but she came through in second with a 16:59, followed by Ashton Endsley with a 17:03. We saw Endsley run a 16:58 5k at district, so Regionals wasn’t her best performance.

Madie Boreman won Region 2 with a 17:45 5k, closely followed by Abby Guidry with a 17:47. Region 3 was dominated by sophomore Julia Heymach who finished in a time of 17:11. Region 4 was a tight battle between Devin Clark and Paige Hofstad, ranked 1-2 in the state, but Clark continues her undefeated season with a time of 17:17, Hofstad in second with 17:19. Abby Gray led the 5A race with no one around her, winning easily with a time of 17:37. She is looking good with a 40 second lead on everyone else in the 5A division for the state title. Below is my interview with her after regionals.

For the boys we saw several quick times in Region 1, with 8 boys under 15 minutes for the three mile race. Erik Wingfield took the win with a time of 14:47. Connor Meaux was the Region 2 champion with a time of 15:22, but the race of the day was Carter Blunt’s 14:53 in the 5A division, the only Texan to have broken 15 minutes for the season. Roderick Bell led Region 3 with a time of 15:21, and Alex Rogers won a tight race in Region 4 with a time of 15:25, just beating out Chris Myers and his teammate Sam Worley.

Looking at team rankings, New Braunfels is looking strong for the girls with four of them under 19 and their fifth runner at 19:01. Not far back is Smithson Valley, and it will be an exciting race as both of their top runners (Paige Hofstad and Devin Clark) will be competing head-to-head for the state title while the teams compete for the team title. Kingwood, Marcus and The Woodlands are all up there as well. In 5A, Canyon Randall is looking strong as the number one team in the division, followed by The Colony and Prosper. College Station High is ranked 7th, impressive for a team moving up from racing 2 miles at the 3A division. Liberty Hill dominates the smaller division with 4 girls under 12 for the 2 mile.

The boys teams are a close bunch. Southlake Carroll beat out El Paso Eastwood at Region 1 in a close race. The Woodlands and The Woodlands College Park are both up there as well, along with Katy Seven Lakes and New Braunfels Canyon. Canyon leads the 5A boys, Giddings leads 4A, Luling leads 3A, Forsan leads 2A and Center leads 1A.
