Boys Mile: Mostrag has a flat showing, struggles to 7th place

Axel Mostrag did not have the race that he had hoped for in California as he finished seventh in the invitational mile (a field of 14) at the Arcadia Invitational in a time of 4:14.80. Mostrag ran boxed in lane 1 for the majority of the race and race winner Michael Chinchar was able to build enough breathing room on the competition before the final lap to hold for the win in 4:09.67. Mostrag did not have his customary deadly kick down the stretch as he finished behind a pack of others following Chinchar. Nonetheless, Mostrag's time is a state leading performance thus far this spring.

Girls 2 Mile: White breaks 11 minutes for 28th time, 10:42

Northside senior Catherine White took seventh in the girls two mile run with a state best time of 10:42.86. Jordan Hasay of California dominated the elite field with a 10:07.65. It was the 28th time that Catherine White has ran under 11 minutes for 3200 meters and/or two miles. Quite an amazing total that White has amassed over her steady high school career.

Boys 2 Mile Run: Graves 19th, 9:22

One of the rare occassions at Arcadia in recent years without a winner well under 9 minutes in the boys two mile run (they have ran 3200 meters instead in the past), but Abingdon junior Griff Graves was unable to finish in the top half of a slower Arcadia field with a 19th place effort of 9:22.68. Graves time puts him just under 9:20 in the 3200 meter conversion at 9:19.28, which is five seconds off his 9:14 personal best from last year. However, Graves will need step it up for a state title in AA after this past weekend with Peter Dorrell of Blacksburg winning the Florida Relays 3200 in 9:10 and Andrew Mearns of Jamestown winning the Colonial Relays 3K in 8:39 (converts to 9:17 3200).

Boys DMR: Without Mostrag, FUMA boys finish 2nd in 10:19

Quite impressive for Fork Union to run a DMR without their 3:52 1500 meter stud in Axel Mostrag and still run a sub 10:20 time as they did at Arcadia with the team of Jamie Reichlen, Curtis Pride, Jeremy Haney, and Szymon Rola with a runner-up time of 10:19.22. No word on splits yet, but it is likely that Rola had to have gone under 4:20 for Fork Union's 1600 meter anchor leg to have finished less than two seconds off their Nike Indoor Nationals time in which Axel Mostrag split a 4:11 on anchor.

Girls 3200 Seeded: MacMillan nearly breaks 11 minutes for first time in 11:03 PR run

Blacksburg junior Laurel MacMillan was headed out to California anyways for spring break to visit her sister, Sarah Jane, a freshmen at UCLA and former runner at Blacksburg High. MacMillan thought she might as well jump into a race in one of the nation's top in-season invitationals found at Arcadia. MacMillan found out exactly how deep the competition was as the All-State Group AA runner finished 9th in the seeded invitational of the 3200 meter run with a 5 second personal best time of 11:03.34. Important to note that the seeded race is not the top race of the meet as MacMillan ran her race during the day on Saturday, while the invitational race would be held later on Saturday night at a two mile distance including fellow Region III runner Catherine White. MacMillan's race was outstanding, but it just goes to show the great level of competition that is found across the nation and particularly in California as there six runners just in her race alone under 11 minutes with 15 others going under 11 minutes at their converted 3200 meter times in the evening's invitational two mile.
