Castro Valley High star Sasha Wallace has been named the Gatorade California Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
“It’s all just a blessing. I’m honored to accept such an award like this one,” texted Wallace to the Bay Area News Group. Wallace was traveling to Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday for the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where she will be competing in the 100 hurdles for her club team, East Oakland Youth Development Center.
It is the second straight year that Wallace has received the honor. Last year, she attended and competed for Holy Names High before transferring to Castro Valley in the summer.
Wallace successfully defended her California Interscholastic Federation state championship titles in both the 100-meter hurdles and the triple jump. Her winning time of 13.43 seconds (wind-legal) in the 100 hurdles leads the state and ranks No. 2 in the nation this season according to DyeStat.com. Her season-best triple jump mark of 42 feet, 4 inches is the best girls mark in the state this season and ranks No. 2 in the nation for wind-legal jumps.
The Oregon-bound senior also added a new event this season, the long jump. She competed in it for the first time in April and less than two months later, she placed sixth in the state championships in the event. Her personal-record mark of 20-2 (wind-aided) tied a North Coast Section Meet of Champions record.
Wallace is now a finalist for the Gatorade national girls track and field athlete of the year award.
