Penn Relays (Friday): Albemarle boys cruise through 4x800, Bethel & Ocean Lakes compete in COA final Apr 25, 2009

The Albemarle boys cruised through their heat in the 4x800 meter relay to easily advance onto the Championships of American finals with a 7:49.47 win. It definitely appeared the national indoor record holders were holding back and are preparing to let it all out in tomorrow's finals. Splits went as followed: Zach Vrhovac (1:56.8), Garrett Bradley (1:58.5), Luke Noble (1:58.9), Anthony Kostelac (1:55.2). (Photo left by Mary DiBiase Blaich of WingedFootPhotos.com) Also running well from Virginia in the boys 4x800 were two Eastern Region squads breaking 8 minutes with Western Branch at 7:56.45 and Ocean Lakes at 7:59.41. The Western Branch boys in the 4x100 meter relay just missed making it into the Championships of America finals as it went down the thousandths of a second between them and Altoona Area (PA) to determine the 8th and final qualifier since both teams ran times of 42.17. Nonetheless, Western Branch moves ono with their state leading time into the finals of the large schools as the top seed. The Ocean Lakes girls had to run from behind for much of the Championships of America finals in the 4x800, but the chasing led to swift splits from Anne Reiner (2:16.7), Natalia Kuhn (2:15.9), and Stacey Nobles (2:18.9) for a final time of 9:23.27 for ninth place. Competing in the large school finals of the 4x100 meter relay, the Bethel and Western Branch girls both ran under 48 seconds for the state's second and third fastest times of the season in the event with Bethel in fourth at 47.49 and Western Branch close behind fifth at 47.61. The Bethel girls later in the COA finals for the 4x400 meter relay where they were unable to keep up with the mighty Jamaican relays who saw three teams all run 3:41 from the country. Bethel finished three seconds off their #1 state ranked 3:49 performance from the qualifying heat in a sixth place of 3:52.85 in the finals. Their splits went as followed: Asia Williams (58.9), Rachel Burrell (58.3), Rashaun Combs (58.6), Emmy Fraenk (57.1). Bobby Peavey of Kellam had one of the better finishes in recent years by a Virginian in the high school boys mile at the Penn Relays with his third place effort of 4:13.02. Mountain View's Thomas Porter also represented the state well finishing right behind Foot Locker Nationals champion Solomon Haile in fifth place in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:30.25, which would convert to a 3200 time two seconds faster than his all-time best of 9:09.

Upper Dublin wins DMR, Mieikas over Haile in 3K Apr 24, 2009

PHILADELPHIA – Matt Lorenzo didn’t want to be that guy again. He didn’t want to be able to say this again: “At nationals, everyone showed up but me,” the Upper Dublin senior said.

Lipsey, Greany, Shen all third at Penn Relays Apr 23, 2009

PHILADELPHIA – She’ll look down at her ankle and remember the day. It won’t be the metal spikes and tore a layer of skin from her ankle but the subsequent moments that will burn into her memory.

Penn Relays: Butts repeats as long jump champ, Bethel 4x400 & Ocean Lakes 4x800 into COA finals Apr 23, 2009

T.C. Williams senior Tynita Butts (pictured right by Tim Fulton of ArmoryTrack.com) returned to the great venue of Franklin Field to once again seize yet another Penn Relays title in the long jump. Butts, the state indoor record holder, went a wind-aided distance of 19'11" to win over Alycia Herring from California. The AAA state indoor champions in the 4x800 meter relay from Ocean Lakes have now earned another honor in qualifying for the Championships of America finals at the Penn Relays. The team of Natalia Kuhn, Anne Reiner, Stacey Nobles, and Peri Bowman posted a time of 9:30.27 to place second in their heat. Kuhn and Reiner both split 2:18 as the first two legs for the Lady Dolphins, while state cross country champion Nobles kept them ahead with a 2:20 third leg. Their performance was 5th best by a US high school team as the leaders Holmwood Tech at 9:08 are from Jamaica. Ocean Lakes 4x800 Race Video on Flotrack The Bethel girls ran the fastest time among all Virginian schools and one of the faster times among the US teams in the qualifying rounds of the 4x100 meter relay. Their time of 47.99 was third fastest in the largest school girls division and will advance them onto the large school finals on Friday. Only Maryland schools Eleanor Roosevelt and Elizabeth Seton made the Championships of America finals in an event dominated by the Jamaica schools qualifying from the small schools division. Next fastest from Virginia in the qualifying heats were Western Branch (48.61), Deep Creek (48.74), and Menchville (48.92). Cool and breezy conditions seemed to have slowed times down. Later in the 4x400 meter relay heats, the Lady Bruins of Bethel faired much better and punched their tickets into the COA finals with a state leading 3:49.55 time to place second in their heat between two of the better Jamaican schools Vere Technical (3:45) and Edwin Allen (3:49). Also running under 4 minutes for a sub 60 second leg average were Western Branch (3:58.42), Menchville (3:59.85). Bethel's 3:49.55 is fastest among US schools with Rancho Verde of California next at 3:49.78 and third fastest overall behind Vere Technical and leaders Holmwood Tech at 3:41 from Jamaica. Bethel Girls 4x400 Race Video on Flotrack Pearl Bickersteth of Potomac Senior gave Tynita Butts a stiff challenge at the state indoor meet in the high jump as the second place finisher in the event. She gained another respectable runner-up finish at the prestigous Penn Relays with a 5'8" clearance in the high jump. Bickersteth was one of five girls to clear 5'8" with the winner at 5'10.75" from Jamaica. Lake Braddock girls posted a solid time of 12:12.08 in the distance medley relay to place 5th overall among a field of 19 teams. Liana Epstein anchored with a 5:03.9 split as Lake Braddock's 1600 meter leg. In the 3000 meter run, Mountain View junior Kaitlyn Davis ran a time, which would convert well under 11 minutes for 3200 meters and 2 miles. The AAA state indoor 3200 champ finished 12th with a time of 10:09.17, which converts to a 3200 time just under 10:54. Emma Dejarnette of Atlee cleared a season best height of 11'9.75" to place fourth overall in the pole vault. 115th Running of The Relays Apr 17, 2009

HSG 400 hurdles (10:00am) - Running for NJ will be the top two 400 hurdles from a year ago including defending outdoor Meet of Champions winner Julie Alexander (Hopewell Valley) and runner up at the MOC Melissa Bellin (Rumson-Fair Haven).    Look for those two to be the top Jersey finishers and give Nikita Tracey (Edwin Allen, JA), who ran 57.41 earlier in the year a run.  Both Alexander and Bellin have similar PR’s with Alexander having run slightly faster, 1:00.60 to 1:00.72.  Both ran those Pr’s at last year’s MOC.  Alexander finished 3rd (1:01.60) a year ago and is looking to do better.  Look for those two to make a run under 1:00.00.  Other NJ competitors include Amber Allen (Passaic County Tech) whose 55.35 indoors at the Eastern States could serve well for the Junior Hurdler, Jennifer Sant Anna (Pascack Hills) and Jade Wilson (Neptune) will also be competing  Considered to be one of the deepest fields ever brought together because of the 1-2 punch from Arcadia (CA) in Kori Carter and Turquoise Thompson HSG 4x800m (10:30am – 11:00am) – New Jersey’s record holder, Southern Regional is opting for the Distance Medley, so this opens the door for a few other locals.  Top NJ contender, Voorhees will be led by 5 time defending MOC champion, Lanie Thompson (pictured to the left).  Voorhees ran 9:19.47 indoors for 2nd in NJ.  Other local teams competing are: Lenape (9:23.71i), Randolph (9:30.41i), Hillsborough (9:31.30i), Hunterdon Central (9:36.10),  Senca (9:36.41i), Bernards (9:38.20i), Red Bank Catholic (9:39.54i), also Hopewell Valley, Notre Dame, Millville and Columbia…click on headline for more
