As we gear up for Woodbridge (the ULTIMATE fast, early 3 mile meet!), let's take a moment to see how 2018's best times so far stack up against those from 2017 at this same point. In particular, let's look at the Southern Section's fastest early-season races, like the Seaside Invitational and Cool Breeze. Are this year's runners ahead of schedule compared to last year? Come take a deep dive into the data with us!
First, let's look at the 3 mile rankings so far, which are always dominated by flat, lightning fast courses in the Southern Section. Starting with the boys:
Two things jump out at me from this quick look at the data. First, this year's Seaside Invitational ran much slower (see the next page for more on this), while Cool Breeze dominates the rankings so far this year. Second, and more importantly, this year's list is much stronger at the bottom end, even though nobody has matched the top two times yet. In fact, last year's #10 time in the rankings would be #26 this year, which is incredible! Now, let's take a look at the girls side of things:
We see the same two factors at play here: Cool Breeze is dominating this year instead of Seaside, and the number of fast early times is way up - last year's #10 time would be #23 this year. The depth of fast early times this year (especially considering that many of Great Oak's top returners have not yet weighed in with a 3 mile race) could be a herald of a SPECTACULAR Woodbridge coming up this weekend!
