Spartans have record breaking day at Eagle Invitational

Capshaw had a tremendous day for the Spartans.

The Benedictine University Eagle Invitational was the site of a record breaking day for the Spartan men's and women's track and field teams on Saturday, April 14.

The Spartan men finished sixth overall in the meet (20 teams) with 35 points while being the top Division III team. Senior's Drew Schmitt and Eric Capshaw both set school reocrd while Capshaw set two other personal records as well.


Schmitt finished third in the 5,000 meter run with a school record time of 15:32.99, while Capshaw finished fifth in the javelin with a school record throw of 51.58 meters, third in the shot put with his personal best throw of 15.17 meters and fifth in the hammer throw with another personal best throw of 46.56 meters.

Freshman Cody McSorely finished fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 58.95 and senior Jesus Gonzalez finished fourth in the hammer throw with a throw of 47.79 meters.

On the women's side, AU finished seventh out of 20 teams with 33.20 points, second among Division III

schools.

Freshman Loretta Johnson set two school records at the meet. She finished sixth in the 100 meter dash with a school record time of 12.99 and eighth in the 200 meter dash with a school record time of 26.65.

Senior Erin Blackburn finished third in the javelin with a throw of 31.85 meters, junior Lauren Miller finished fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 9.92 meters, The 4x400 meter relay team finished fifth with a time of 51.74 and freshman Kaylee Swearingen finished fifth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.94.

Next action for the Spartan men's and women's track and field team comes on Friday, April 20 when they travel to the Concordia University Chicago Cougar Invitational in River Forest, Ill.
