Countdown to XC Day 13: Eleanor Roosevelt

You can forgive the Roosevelt boys if they have a down season in 2018 - after all, they are coming off a spectacular 2017 that saw them finish 2nd in the Division 1 state meet and travel to Portland for Nike Cross Nationals, where they finished 15th. More important for this profile, however, is the fact that the Mustangs graduated a whopping 6 of their top 11 runners from last fall. As you might expect after such a big loss to graduation, depth will be the major obstacle to continued success for Roosevelt. Rising freshman Andres Chavez will help, as he has a PR of 9:24 for 3000 in club competition. Returning #1 runner Raul Chavez (no relation) has big shoes to fill, but he looks ready after clocking 9:22 in the 3200 on the track. This has been one of California's better teams when it comes to year-to-year improvement over the last 3 cross country seasons, so don't count the Mustangs out in 2018!

The purpose of the Countdown To XC is not to predict the top 30 teams in the state for the upcoming season (although we certainly hope that the top 15-20 teams are included in the countdown at some point). The goal is to recognize thirty teams to watch as cross country begins, using data to uncover squads with strengths that stand out from the pack. The countdown is also not meant to be in a strict order, because it's impossible to sort out several teams of similar strength at this point of the season.
