Countdown to XC Day 16: Clovis North

The Broncos finished a respectable 15th in the Division 1 state meet race last fall, and they only had one senior competing in Clovis. That makes them the 8th-best returning squad from that meet (although it should always be noted that teams with 3 or more seniors won't show in that metric) and 15th best in California overall. Since then, there have been encouraging signs of improvement: most notably, returning #1 Isaiah Galindo, a rising junior, posted impressive marks of 9:05 and 4:18 on the track this spring, putting him in the conversation for breakout star of the upcoming cross country season. In fact, it looks like the junior class will lead the way in 2018, as Clovis North's top 4 3200 runners were all Class of 2020. With four juniors and a sophomore in contention for top 7 spots, this could be the beginning of a two-year window for the Broncos to make a splash on the state level and stake their claim to the title of best in the Central Section.

The purpose of the Countdown To XC is not to predict the top 30 teams in the state for the upcoming season (although we certainly hope that the top 15-20 teams are included in the countdown at some point). The goal is to recognize thirty teams to watch as cross country begins, using data to uncover squads with strengths that stand out from the pack. The countdown is also not meant to be in a strict order, because it's impossible to sort out several teams of similar strength at this point of the season.
