Countdown to XC Day 22: Paso Robles Boys

2017 brought a move up to Division 2, but one thing remained constant for Paso Robles: making the state meet. Signs are pointing up for the Bearcats, starting with a strong spring season: Steven Scruggs and Pablo Cortes clocked 4:22 and 4:23 respectively, with Damian Gavilan joining those two under 9:40 in the 3200. Even more important: Paso Robles returns six of their top seven from the squad that finished 14th in D2 (including their top 5 3200 runners on the track). With a solid record of year-to-year improvement, this school has all the hallmarks of a team getting ready to make a step forward, and I predict the Bearcats will move well into the top 10 in their state meet race in 2018.

UPDATE: after the Southern Section meeting, we were reminded that Paso Robles is one of 13 schools that have decided to move from the CIF-SS to the Central Section.

The purpose of the Countdown To XC is not to predict the top 30 teams in the state for the upcoming season (although we certainly hope that the top 15-20 teams are included in the countdown at some point). The goal is to recognize thirty teams to watch as cross country begins, using data to uncover squads with strengths that stand out from the pack. The countdown is also not meant to be in a strict order, because it's impossible to sort out several teams of similar strength at this point of the season.
