Countdown to XC Day 25: Palisades Charter Girls

2017 was a year of unfinished business for Palisades, as they went into the championship season with #1 runner Sarah Bentley not anywhere close to full strength. As a result, the Dolphins finished 2nd in the LA City Section Division 1 race, then 20th at the state meet. Freshman Miranda Schriver stepped up admirably and won the individual section title, setting up the possibility that this year's squad will have two top-quality front-runners. The Dolphins only lost one senior from their top 7 last fall and should be highly motivated to challenge Granada Hills for the Los Angeles team championship. If everything goes well for Palisades, this could be a top-10 team in Division 1, especially with Bentley back on track - and her PR of 11:08 in the 3200 this spring indicates she is raring to go. Jessica Bierschenk and Schriver also had strong track seasons, which is encouraging for the development of depth. If only the Dolphins could convince 5:09 miler Elizabeth Rene to run in the fall, which the rising senior has never done. Even without her, though, this Palisades team is poised for a very strong fall.

The purpose of the Countdown To XC is not to predict the top 30 teams in the state for the upcoming season (although we certainly hope that the top 15-20 teams are included in the countdown at some point). The goal is to recognize thirty teams to watch as cross country begins, using data to uncover squads with strengths that stand out from the pack. The countdown is also not meant to be in a strict order, because it's impossible to sort out several teams of similar strength at this point of the season.
