Girls Report from the National Pole Vault Summit
Santa Catalina junior Laurel Wong (pictured above from June's CIF-State meet) had the top mark among CA girls vaulters at the National Pole Vault Summit over the weekend in Reno.
Wong, the defending CA Winter Championships titleholder, was third overall at the meet. Reagann Leleux from Louisiana cleared 13-10 and was the overall winner.
Wong went 12-6 at the PV Summit last winter and followed that up with a 12-10.25 clearance to win at the Winter Championships. She has an outdoor PR of 13-2, achieved at Arcadia last spring, and was fifth at CIF-State behind four now-graduated seniors.
Elizabeth Funk, a junior at Clovis West, also cleared 12-6 (a PR) at last year's CIF-State final. This weekend she cleared 11-6, a seven-inch improvement over her best last year in Reno.
San Jose Presentation junior Isabella Grant also reached new heights in Reno, clearing 11-10, No. 2 among CA jumps and a four-inch improvement on her previous PR (set outdoors).
Four of the six CA vaulters to clear 11-8 each set all-conditions PRs: Tessa Watkins, Jenna Portis, Paige Sommers (a versatile rising age-group standout from the Thousand Oaks Flyers), and Camryn Thomson.
