In this report, we will reflect back on last week's Los Angeles City Section Preliminary meet and project those results forward in advance of Saturday's section finals.
The CIF conducts State championships across five enrollment-based divisions but the LA City Section does not compete in Division 4.
Section champion teams for boys and girls in each of the four divisions will advance to the Nov. 25 State Championships in Fresno. Second place teams for boys and girls only in Division 1 also advance. Only the team champion in Divisions 2, 3 and 5 will advance to the State meet.
The state's individual qualifying formula is based on the number of qualifying teams allowed per division. In this case, with the City getting two teams in Division 1, the top five individuals that place among the top 12 overall will advance to State. In Divisions 2, 3 and 5, where the section is only allowed one team qualifier, the top five individuals not on an advancing team, must finish in the top eight overall to advance.
