The defending Southern Section Division 3 champs, West Torrance finished 2nd to an inspired Cathedral Catholic team at the state meet. The Warriors had 4 seniors in their top 7 last fall, but they still manage to return enough talent to rank 7th in their section (and 1st among D3 squads). You have to take that with a small grain of salt, because times from Woodbridge and the Seaside Invitational can inflate a team in the rankings - although it's worth noting that 4 of the Warriors' top 7 returners ran their season best at the Southern Section prelims or finals, which is meaningful. Rory Abberton put up solid track times, leading what is shaping up to be a really tight pack: West Torrance had 6 returning runners separated by only 6 seconds in the 1600. It's not much of a stretch to imagine this team competing for the section title, and for a podium finish at the state meet, again in 2017.
