California State Track and Field Championship: Running Events Preview

4x100 Meter Relays

Girls Favorite: Carson (LA) 45.42
Leading Contenders: Serra (SS) 45.92 & El Camino Real (LA) 46.43
State Meet Record: St. Bernard (SS) 44.70 1997

The dominant sprint program in the 2000s has been Long Beach Poly (SS) with seven 400 meter relay victories since 2002. While LBP will not win this year, four former athletes now competing for Carson (LA) can bring home another gold as the favorites. They ran a California #1 45.52 at the CIF LA City Championship which is also US #6. 10 points in this event will go a long ways in their effort for the coveted team title. Serra (SS) is the other CA team that has secured a time under 46 seconds in their last meet, the CIF SS Masters Meet. El Camino Real (LA) is quite familiar with Carson finishing in 2nd at their section final. The top team from the North will be Bishop O'Dowd (NCS) which seems to be peaking at the right time with a season best 47.23 at their section final.

Boys Favorite:
 Vista Murrieta (SS) 40.63
Leading Contenders: Bellarmine (CCS) 41.37 & Martin Luther King (SS) 41.54
State Meet Record: Hawthorne (SS) 40.24 1989

The clear favorite in this field is Vista Murrieta (SS). They have the CA #1 time at 40.63 and will be plenty hungry from last year's DNF at the state finals. That did not deter them from claiming the team title but starting out with 10 points here will be a nice change from last year's state final. Their main competition may be a surprising one as it will be Bellarmine (CCS) with their just completed 41.37 at the CCS final. Senior sprinter Kyle Macauley returned to their lineup and now Bellarmine will potentially have two more races to lower their CCS #2 all-time mark and challenge Vista Murrieta. Also in the mix is the 2nd place SS team, Martin Luther King (SS).
