Sac Joaquin Section Detailed Preview

Division 2 Boys

Teams to Watch

Del Campo took this division last year, powered in part by two seniors that went 1-2 in the section finals race. The Cougars still have plenty of talent back, but the database says Atwater may have caught them - last year's 3rd-place team returns its top 3 as well as 5 of the top 7. Elk Grove will definitely be in the mix, and Whitney has the 2nd-best set of returners from the 2014 section finals, making this one of the more interesting team races in the section. If you prefer 5K rankings, you have to include Oakmont among the list of contenders. A dark horse candidate: Granite Bay finished 2nd in Division 1 last year, but they also lost 4 guys to graduation. If they've been able to develop some young talent to replace those departed runners, the move down to Division 2 could seem more friendly.

Individuals to Watch

Andrew Cluserath (Rocklin) is the top returner from the 2014 section finals, the lone junior among the top 7 overall in that race. Daniel Ambriz (Merced) and Tre Lockwood (Granite Bay) come into the division after finishing 5th and 7th in the Division 1 race last November; Ambriz also had a very strong track season, running 4:16 and 9:26. Oakmont's Logan Taggart also looks like a contender for the top 3 in the division.
