Moffett, Herrera Strike Double Distance Gold: Central Section Masters Recap

The Central Section completed its road to the CIF State Meet before anyone else, determining the final qualifiers this past Saturday at Buchanan. Along the way, there were several athletes that stood out by virtue of their outstanding performances. Highlights

  • Hanna Waller (Buchanan) was her typical, dominant self, taking the 200 in a wind-aided 24.28 and the 400 in 54.09. She also ran on the winning Buchanan 4x100 and 4x400, which clocked 47.05 and 3:52.16


  • Lauren Moffett (Clovis North) won the 1600 in 4:52.62 CA #7, then doubled back to claim gold in the 3200 by running 10:37.01. Teammate Mikaela Smith (Clovis North) brought home the 800 victory in 2:09.01, holding off Hannah Benoit (Buchanan), who ran 2:09.40 CA #2 US #16.


  • Morganne Hill (Liberty) cranked out a 41.76 CA #1 US #7 in the 300 Hurdles, and also won the 100 Hurdles in a wind-aided time of 13.94.


  • Eduardo Herrera (Madera South) ran away with both the 1600 and the 3200, clocking 4:10.13 CA #9 in the former and 9:09.15 in the latter race.


  • The timers had to go to the thousandth of a second to determine the winner in the boys' 800, with Isaac Trevino (Centennial) and Connor Morello (Clovis) getting credit for identical 1:51.39 times that rank CA #1 and US #12.


  • Seth Brooks (Kingsburg) took over the state lead in the triple jump with his 49' 9.75" CA #1 US #6 mark. Teammate Joey Souza returned to the 24-foot range in the long jump, but finished second to Bryce Huggins (Bakersfield).


  • Buchanan High took home both team titles, winning the boys' meet 63-55 over Bakersfield while the girls' team racked up 144 points to defeat Liberty by 80.
